Neurological Emergency — Warning Signs That Need Immediate Hospital Care

Some neurological symptoms are emergencies. Knowing which ones require immediate hospital attention — and acting quickly — can save a life or prevent permanent disability.

Neurological emergencies — stroke, status epilepticus, meningitis, severe head injury — are time-critical conditions where minutes matter. At Sri Anand Child and Neuro Center, Chanda Nagar, Dr. Anand Karnam is available for urgent neurological consultation. For life-threatening emergencies, go directly to the nearest emergency department — do not wait for an appointment. This guide helps you recognise which symptoms are true emergencies and what to do.

RED FLAG Neurological Symptoms — Go to Emergency Immediately

Sudden Weakness or Numbness on One Side of the Body

Sudden onset weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg — especially on one side — is the most common sign of stroke. Use the FAST test: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency. Every minute of stroke treatment delay costs approximately 2 million neurons.

Thunderclap Headache — Worst Headache of Your Life

'The worst headache of my life, coming on suddenly' is a neurosurgical emergency until proven otherwise. This pattern suggests subarachnoid haemorrhage (brain bleed) — which is fatal if not treated within hours. Do not take painkillers and wait — go to emergency immediately.

Seizure Lasting More Than 5 Minutes (Status Epilepticus)

A seizure that does not stop within 5 minutes, or multiple seizures without regaining consciousness between them, is a medical emergency called status epilepticus. Call emergency services immediately. Do not put anything in the person's mouth.

Sudden Loss of Vision in One or Both Eyes

Sudden vision loss — 'curtain coming down', complete vision black-out, or sudden double vision — can indicate retinal artery occlusion, stroke affecting visual pathways, or giant cell arteritis. Seek emergency evaluation within hours.

Sudden Confusion, Disorientation, or Unconsciousness

Sudden onset confusion, inability to recognise family members, loss of consciousness, or extreme agitation — especially in someone who was previously well — requires emergency evaluation for stroke, encephalitis, hypoglycaemia, or toxic-metabolic causes.

Fever + Severe Headache + Neck Stiffness

This triad — high fever, the worst headache of your life, and inability to touch chin to chest (neck stiffness) — is meningitis until proven otherwise. Bacterial meningitis is fatal within hours without treatment. Go to emergency immediately — do not wait.

Urgent — But Not Emergency — Neurological Symptoms

First Seizure (Stable After Event)

If someone has had their first seizure but has now recovered, is conscious, and is stable — this needs urgent (within 24–48 hours) rather than emergency neurology consultation. Call 90633 66983 for an urgent appointment.

Progressive Weakness Over Days to Weeks

Gradually worsening weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking that has been progressing over days — requires urgent (not emergency) neurology evaluation within days. Could represent Guillain-Barré syndrome, myelopathy, or other sub-acute conditions.

Recurring Severe Headaches

Recurring severe headaches — especially if they have changed in character recently — need urgent (within 1–2 weeks) neurology consultation. Not an emergency if headache is similar to previous episodes and patient is otherwise well.

Memory Loss or Confusion Over Weeks

Gradual memory decline over weeks to months requires neurology evaluation within 1–2 weeks — to exclude treatable causes and to initiate assessment for dementia. Not an emergency unless acute onset.

Transient Neurological Symptoms (TIA)

If weakness, speech difficulty, or vision change was brief (minutes to hours) and has now fully resolved — this may represent a TIA (mini-stroke). This is urgent — please call 90633 66983 for same-day or next-day appointment. TIA has a 10–15% risk of stroke in the next 48 hours.
