Epilepsy Treatment in Hyderabad
A seizure is your brain's way of signalling something is wrong. With the right treatment, 70% of people with epilepsy achieve complete seizure freedom.
Epilepsy affects over 10 million people in India — making it one of the most common neurological disorders in the country. Yet stigma and misinformation mean most patients in Hyderabad delay treatment for years. Dr. Anand Karnam provides evidence-based epilepsy care following International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and AAN guidelines. In-house EEG means you get your diagnosis without waiting weeks for a referral.
Key Points
- Epilepsy affects over 10 million people in India — it is one of the most common neurological conditions.
- 70% of people with epilepsy achieve complete seizure freedom on the first or second antiepileptic drug.
- One seizure does not mean epilepsy — a neurologist must evaluate EEG and imaging to determine risk of recurrence.
- In-house EEG at our clinic means same-day or next-day diagnosis without referral delays.
- During a seizure: do NOT put anything in the mouth — turn the person on their side and time the seizure.

Types of Seizures — What to Look For
Generalised Tonic-Clonic Seizures
The 'grand mal' seizure — sudden loss of consciousness, rigid muscles, then rhythmic jerking of limbs. Usually lasts 1–3 minutes. The most recognised type.
Absence Seizures
Brief episodes where the person stares blankly, stops responding, and then resumes normally. Often mistaken for daydreaming, especially in children. Usually lasts 5–30 seconds.
Focal (Partial) Seizures
Starts in one part of the brain. May cause jerking of one limb, strange sensations, automatisms (lip-smacking, picking), or a 'déjà vu' feeling. May spread and become generalised.
Febrile Seizures in Children
Triggered by high fever in children aged 6 months to 5 years. Usually benign and brief. However, a neurologist should evaluate any febrile seizure to rule out meningitis or a first unprovoked seizure.
Post-Ictal Confusion
After a seizure, most patients experience 'post-ictal' confusion, tiredness, or headache for minutes to hours. This is a normal part of the seizure event, not a separate problem.
Our Epilepsy Care Approach
In-House EEG Diagnosis
EEG (electroencephalogram) records brain electrical activity and is essential for epilepsy classification. Our in-house EEG lab means same-day or next-day testing without referral delays.
Evidence-Based AED Selection
We select antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) based on your seizure type, age, gender, comorbidities, and lifestyle. We use the ILAE first-line recommendations — valproate, levetiracetam, lamotrigine, carbamazepine, and others where appropriate.
Drug Monitoring and Dose Optimisation
Regular review of drug levels, side effects, and seizure control. Most patients need dose adjustments in the first 6–12 months before achieving optimal control.
Safety and Lifestyle Counselling
Driving regulations, swimming, heights, contraception for women, and work safety — we cover all the practical questions that change how you live with epilepsy.
Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Workup
For patients not responding to 2 AEDs, we initiate a structured drug-resistant epilepsy evaluation including video-EEG and MRI review to explore surgical and other advanced options.
