EEG Test in Hyderabad — Sri Anand Hospital

In-house EEG laboratory at Chanda Nagar. Same-day or next-day booking. Interpreted by Dr. Anand Karnam, DrNB Neurologist.

An EEG (electroencephalogram) records the electrical activity of the brain through electrodes placed on the scalp. It is the most important diagnostic test for epilepsy and seizure disorders, but also provides useful information in a range of other neurological conditions. Sri Anand Hospital has an in-house EEG laboratory at Chanda Nagar — meaning you can be tested on the same day or the following day, with the report interpreted personally by Dr. Anand Karnam.

Key Points

  • An EEG records brain electrical activity — it is painless, non-invasive, and takes 20-40 minutes.
  • EEG is the gold standard for diagnosing epilepsy types and guiding choice of anti-epileptic medication.
  • Sleep deprivation before an EEG increases the chance of capturing diagnostic brain wave patterns.
  • A normal EEG does not rule out epilepsy — about 50% of people with epilepsy have a normal routine EEG.
  • Our in-house EEG means same-day results — no referral to a distant hospital needed.

When Is an EEG Needed?

First or Recurrent Seizures

The EEG helps classify the seizure type, identify a specific epilepsy syndrome, guide medication selection, and assess the risk of recurrence after a first seizure.

Epilepsy Monitoring

In established epilepsy, repeat EEG helps monitor for ongoing epileptiform activity, assess response to treatment, and guide decisions about medication reduction or withdrawal.

Unexplained Blackouts or Fainting

When the cause of loss of consciousness is unclear — distinguishing epileptic seizure from cardiac syncope (fainting) or non-epileptic attack disorder (NEAD).

Sleep Disorders

Overnight or sleep EEG can evaluate for sleep-related epilepsy syndromes and unusual movements or behaviour during sleep (parasomnias, nocturnal seizures).

Encephalopathy (Brain Dysfunction)

In patients with confusion, impaired consciousness, or altered behaviour, EEG can detect specific patterns indicating encephalitis, metabolic encephalopathy, or non-convulsive status epilepticus.

How We Conduct EEG at Sri Anand Hospital

Preparation (What to Do Before)

No specific preparation for a routine EEG. For sleep EEG, we ask you to stay awake the night before. Wash your hair the morning before — do not apply oil or conditioner. Take all regular medications as normal unless specifically advised otherwise.

What Happens During the Test

20–30 electrodes are applied to your scalp with a water-soluble gel. You lie or sit comfortably for 20–40 minutes. You will be asked to breathe deeply for 3 minutes (hyperventilation) and will be exposed to a flashing light (photic stimulation) — standard activation procedures that provoke abnormal activity.

Same-Day Report

Dr. Anand Karnam reviews and interprets your EEG personally. A written report is provided with the recording — on the same day in most cases.

Video EEG for Complex Cases

For patients with unclear spells or drug-resistant epilepsy, prolonged video-EEG monitoring allows correlation of clinical behaviour with EEG changes — the gold standard for seizure type characterisation.

Integrated with Clinical Management

EEG results are always interpreted in the clinical context — we do not treat an EEG report in isolation. Dr. Anand reviews the results with you in consultation and explains what they mean for your management.

"Patients are often anxious before their first EEG — they think it involves electric shocks. In fact, the electrodes only read the brain's own electrical signals — never put any electricity into your head. It is completely painless and provides invaluable information about brain function."
