Parkinson's Disease Treatment in Hyderabad
A slow tremor. Stiff muscles. Small handwriting. Shuffling walk. Parkinson's disease is manageable — early diagnosis and treatment make a profound difference.
Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's, affecting approximately 1–2% of people over 60 in India. Many patients in Hyderabad are not diagnosed for years — attributed to 'old age' rather than a treatable neurological condition. Dr. Anand Karnam provides expert Parkinson's diagnosis and management using UK Parkinson's Disease Society Brain Bank criteria, and coordinates care with our physiotherapy team for mobility and quality of life.
Key Points
- Parkinson's is caused by loss of dopamine-producing cells — it is NOT just a tremor disorder.
- Early clues include reduced arm swing, small handwriting (micrographia), and loss of smell.
- Levodopa-based medications significantly improve motor function and quality of life.
- Physiotherapy alongside medication is proven to improve gait, balance, and independence.
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a highly effective surgical option for advanced, medication-resistant cases.

Parkinson's — Recognising the Early Signs
Resting Tremor
A tremor that occurs when the limb is at rest and disappears with voluntary movement. Typically starts in one hand. Often described as 'pill-rolling' — thumb rubbing against fingers.
Bradykinesia (Slowness of Movement)
Movements become progressively slower and smaller. Handwriting shrinks (micrographia). Facial expressions reduce (hypomimia). Arm swing reduces while walking. This is the cardinal symptom of Parkinson's.
Rigidity (Muscle Stiffness)
Stiffness and resistance in the muscles of the arms, legs, or neck. May cause aching muscles or a painful shoulder — sometimes misdiagnosed as arthritis in the early stages.
Postural Instability
Difficulty with balance and coordination, leading to falls. Typically appears later in the disease course. A shuffling, festinating gait (small rapid steps) is characteristic.
Non-Motor Symptoms
Loss of smell, constipation, REM sleep behaviour disorder (acting out dreams), depression, and daytime sleepiness can precede motor symptoms by years — sometimes the first clue to an underlying Parkinson's process.
Parkinson's Management at Sri Anand
Levodopa and Dopaminergic Therapy
Levodopa (combined with carbidopa) remains the most effective medication for Parkinson's motor symptoms. We carefully titrate the dose and timing to maximise 'on' time and minimise fluctuations.
Dopamine Agonists
Pramipexole and ropinirole can be used as initial therapy in younger patients to delay levodopa use and reduce the risk of dyskinesias (involuntary movements).
Physiotherapy for Parkinson's
Dr. Harisha provides specialised Parkinson's physiotherapy — LSVT BIG exercises, gait training, fall prevention, and balance rehabilitation — which are essential alongside medication.
Monitoring for Complications
We monitor for motor complications (wearing-off, dyskinesias), cognitive changes, psychosis, and autonomic dysfunction — adjusting medication proactively to maintain quality of life.
Caregiver Support
We provide dedicated guidance to family members on safe patient care, medication management, fall prevention, and when to seek urgent review.
