Stroke Treatment in Hyderabad
Stroke is a medical emergency. Recognising the FAST signs and acting within the golden hour saves lives and prevents permanent disability.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in India. Every minute of untreated stroke, approximately 1.9 million brain cells die. Dr. Anand Karnam provides immediate stroke evaluation, acute management guidance, and comprehensive post-stroke care — following American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) guidelines.
Key Points
- Every minute of untreated stroke, approximately 1.9 million brain cells die — act within minutes, not hours.
- Remember FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 108.
- Clot-busting treatment (thrombolysis) must be given within 4.5 hours of stroke onset to be effective.
- A TIA (mini-stroke) carries a 10% risk of major stroke within 2 days — treat it as an emergency.
- High blood pressure is responsible for approximately 50% of strokes in India — it is controllable.

FAST — Recognise a Stroke Immediately
F — Face Drooping
Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Is the smile uneven? Facial asymmetry is one of the most reliable stroke warning signs.
A — Arm Weakness
Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward or feel weak? Sudden weakness on one side of the body is a classic stroke sign.
S — Speech Difficulty
Is the person's speech suddenly slurred, confused, or impossible to understand? Can they repeat a simple sentence? Speech problems indicate involvement of the dominant brain hemisphere.
T — Time to Call 108/112
If you observe ANY of the above signs, call emergency services immediately. Note the exact time symptoms started — this is critical for the treating team.
Other Warning Signs
Sudden severe headache ('worst headache of my life'), sudden vision loss in one eye, sudden difficulty walking or loss of balance — all require immediate emergency evaluation.
Stroke Care at Sri Anand Hospital
Immediate Stroke Evaluation
Rapid clinical assessment, CT brain guidance, blood tests, ECG, and cardiac monitoring to determine stroke type and guide acute management decisions.
TIA (Mini-Stroke) Workup
A TIA is a stroke that resolves within 24 hours — but carries a 10% risk of major stroke within 2 days. We treat TIA as an emergency with urgent brain imaging, cardiac evaluation, and secondary prevention.
Secondary Stroke Prevention
Most strokes are preventable with proper management of risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, high cholesterol, and smoking. We create personalised prevention plans.
Post-Stroke Rehabilitation
Our in-house physiotherapy team (Dr. Harisha) provides post-stroke rehabilitation — including movement re-education, strength training, gait training, and activities of daily living.
Caregiver Education
We train family members and caregivers in safe patient handling, pressure sore prevention, swallowing precautions, and recognising warning signs of recurrent stroke.
Why Choose Sri Anand Hospital?
Treated by: Dr. Anand Karnam · DrNB (Neurology) · Stroke & Cerebrovascular Specialist
"Stroke is entirely preventable in most cases. When I see a patient after a TIA, I know we have a narrow window to prevent a devastating major stroke. The secondary prevention plan we build together in those first days can mean the difference between a brief warning and a life-changing disability."
