The Right Health Questions at the Right Time — How to Get More from Your Doctor Appointment

Most patients leave a doctor's appointment with questions they forgot to ask, or answers they did not fully understand. Dr. Anand Karnam explains how asking the right questions at the right time saves lives — and what to ask.

The quality of medical care you receive is significantly influenced by the quality of the information exchange between you and your doctor. A doctor can only diagnose and treat based on the information they receive. Incomplete information, misunderstood advice, or failure to ask critical questions can lead to delayed diagnoses, incorrect treatment, and preventable complications.

Before the Appointment: What to Prepare

  • Write your main concern in one sentence — the chief complaint. What is the most important thing you want the doctor to address today?
  • List all symptoms, including ones that seem unrelated — describe their onset, duration, severity, and what makes them better or worse
  • Bring a list of all medications — every tablet, injection, supplement, and home remedy — with doses
  • Note relevant family history for your chief complaint
  • Bring previous investigation reports — old ECGs, scans, blood tests

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

About your diagnosis: "What do you think is causing this?" "How certain are you?" "Are there other conditions I should be tested for?"

About investigations: "What is this test looking for?" "How long will the results take?" "What will you do if the result is normal / abnormal?"

About medications: "How long do I need to take this?" "What should I do if I miss a dose?" "What side effects should I watch for and report?" "Can I take this with my current medications?"

About follow-up: "When should I come back?" "What symptoms should prompt me to come earlier?" "Is there anything I should watch for at home?"

The Most Important Question of All

Before leaving: "Is there anything I need to do that I haven't done yet — and is there anything important you haven't told me?" This open-ended question catches the information gaps that fall through the cracks of a busy consultation.
