Burning or Tingling in Your Feet? It Could Be Nerve Damage

Burning or Tingling in Your Feet? It Could Be Nerve Damage

Do your feet feel like they are on fire at night? Do you get tingling or numbness in your hands and feet? This is often nerve damage (neuropathy) — and it is very treatable if caught early.

Do you have a burning or electric-shock feeling in your feet, especially at night? Does it feel like pins and needles that just won't go away? You may be dealing with nerve damage — a condition called neuropathy — and it is more common in India than you might think.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy means the nerves outside your brain and spinal cord are damaged. These nerves carry messages between your body and brain — telling you when something is hot, cold, sharp, or painful, and also controlling your muscles. When they are damaged, they send wrong signals — causing burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness.

What Causes Nerve Damage?

In India, the most common cause by far is diabetes. High blood sugar, over months and years, slowly damages the small blood vessels that feed the nerves. This is called diabetic neuropathy.

Other common causes include:

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency — Very common in vegetarians. B12 is found mainly in animal foods like meat, eggs, and milk. Low B12 causes nerve damage that can creep up slowly.
  • Thyroid problems — An underactive thyroid can cause tingling in the hands and feet
  • Alcohol use — Regular heavy drinking damages nerves over time
  • Kidney disease
  • Some medicines (chemotherapy drugs are a known cause)

What Does Nerve Damage Feel Like?

  • Burning or electric-shock pain — often worse at night when you are trying to sleep
  • Tingling ("pins and needles") in the feet, toes, hands, or fingers
  • Numbness — feeling like your feet are not fully there, like wearing thick socks when you are barefoot
  • Weakness in the legs or hands — dropping objects, difficulty climbing stairs
  • Extra sensitivity — even a light touch from a bedsheet feels painful
  • Loss of balance, especially when walking in the dark or on uneven ground

Why Should You Not Ignore It?

Nerve damage that is not treated gets worse over time. In diabetic patients, numbness in the feet can lead to cuts and wounds going unnoticed, which can become serious infections. This is a major cause of limb problems in diabetic patients. Getting diagnosed and treated early protects your nerves and your overall health.

How is It Diagnosed?

A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) is the main test for neuropathy. It measures how fast and how well electrical signals travel through your nerves. It is a painless test that takes about 30–45 minutes. At Sri Anand Child and Neuro Center in Chanda Nagar, Hyderabad, Dr. Anand performs and reads NCS tests on the same day — no waiting for results to come back from a lab.

"Don't ignore burning or tingling in your feet, especially if you have diabetes or vitamin B12 deficiency. These symptoms are telling you something important."

Treatment: What Can Be Done?

  • Treat the cause: If it is diabetes, better blood sugar control slows or stops further damage. If it is B12 deficiency, B12 injections or supplements can bring significant improvement.
  • Pain relief medicines: Specific medicines (not ordinary painkillers) help reduce the burning and tingling sensation
  • Physiotherapy: Helps with balance, coordination, and preventing falls
  • Foot care: For diabetic patients, checking your feet daily is critical
