25,000 parents searched this. When a child cannot concentrate at school or keep forgetting things, most parents blame laziness or screens. A neurologist's view is often very different — and very treatable.
A parent brings their 9-year-old to the clinic. "He doesn't study. He forgets everything I teach him. He can't sit for 10 minutes. His teacher says he disrupts the class." The parents have tried strict discipline, extra coaching, removing screen time, and threats. Nothing works. They wonder if their child is simply "not intelligent enough."
In most such cases, the real problem is neurological — and once identified, it is manageable.
The Most Common Neurological Causes of School Difficulty
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): The most common neurodevelopmental condition, affecting 5–7% of children. ADHD is not a behaviour problem — it is a brain difference in dopamine and norepinephrine circuits that regulate attention, impulse control, and working memory. Three subtypes: predominantly inattentive (easily distracted, loses things, does not finish tasks), predominantly hyperactive-impulsive (cannot sit still, acts without thinking), and combined type.
Specific Learning Disabilities: Dyslexia (difficulty reading and decoding written words), dyscalculia (difficulty with numbers and mathematical concepts), dysgraphia (difficulty with handwriting and written expression) — children with average to above-average intelligence who struggle specifically in one or two academic domains.
Anxiety: Children with anxiety often appear inattentive — their mind is occupied with worries, not the lesson. They may be perfectionists who are so afraid of making mistakes that they do not attempt tasks.
Sleep disorders: A child with obstructive sleep apnoea from adenoid hypertrophy sleeps poorly and is cognitively impaired during the day — often misdiagnosed as ADHD.
Absence epilepsy: Brief, subtle staring spells (3–10 seconds) that look like inattention but are actually seizures. The child has no memory of the episode. Easily diagnosed on EEG.
Nutritional deficiencies: Iron deficiency anaemia and Vitamin B12 deficiency both impair cognitive function and concentration in children.
What Assessment Involves
At Sri Anand CNC, the assessment for a child with school difficulties includes: detailed developmental history, cognitive screening, vision and hearing screen, blood tests (full blood count, iron studies, B12, thyroid), and EEG if absence seizures are suspected. ADHD diagnosis is clinical — based on behavioural history across home and school settings.
Management
Treatment depends entirely on the diagnosis: ADHD responds to behavioural therapy, school accommodations, and sometimes medication (methylphenidate). Learning disabilities require specialised educational support. Nutritional deficiencies respond dramatically to supplementation. Absence epilepsy is treated with ethosuximide or valproate.
