High BP Cost Him His Life — The Stroke Story Every Hyderabad Family Must Watch

High BP Cost Him His Life — The Stroke Story Every Hyderabad Family Must Watch

450,000 people watched this real patient story. Dr. Anand Karnam shares how uncontrolled high blood pressure silently leads to a devastating stroke — and what families can do to prevent the same fate.

This is a real story from Dr. Anand Karnam's practice. A man in his 40s — the breadwinner of his family, father of two children — had known about his high blood pressure for years. He took his tablets "sometimes." He felt fine. One morning he could not lift his left arm and his speech was garbled. By the time his family brought him to hospital, the window for clot-dissolving treatment had passed.

His story is not unusual. It is the story of thousands of families across Hyderabad every year.

The Sequence: Uncontrolled BP → Silent Damage → Stroke

High blood pressure does not hurt. That is what makes it lethal. Over months and years of elevated BP, three things happen inside the arteries supplying the brain:

  1. Atherosclerosis: Plaques build up in the carotid and cerebral arteries — narrowing the vessel and creating surfaces where clots can form
  2. Small vessel disease: The tiny perforating arteries deep in the brain thicken and become fragile — causing lacunar infarcts (small silent strokes) and white matter damage
  3. Aneurysm formation: Chronic high pressure weakens arterial walls, forming bulges that can rupture — causing subarachnoid haemorrhage

When the cumulative damage crosses a threshold — often triggered by a sudden BP spike — a full stroke occurs. At this point, years of silent damage become visible on a scan.

The Three Messages From This Story

1. Take your BP tablets every single day. Not when you "feel" your BP is high. Not when you remember. Every day. At the same time. Set an alarm if needed.

2. Know your family member's BP. Many men in Hyderabad refuse to check their BP regularly — considering it unnecessary unless they feel unwell. Check it monthly if on treatment, quarterly if in the normal range.

3. When stroke symptoms appear — move immediately. Do not wait. Do not give food or water. Do not drive yourself. Call 108. Note the time. Every minute of delay = more permanent brain damage.

The Target

BP below 130/80 mmHg for most adults. If you or a family member has BP above this on two separate readings — see a doctor this week, not "when you get time."
