Meningitis: Symptoms to Know and Why It Is a Medical Emergency

Dr. Anand Karnam Jan 10, 2026 4 min read

Neurology

Meningitis can progress from headache and stiffness to life-threatening illness within hours. Every parent and adult should know these warning signs.

Meningitis — infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord — is one of the most important medical emergencies. It can progress from mild symptoms to life-threatening illness within 24 hours. Knowing the warning signs can save a life.

What Is Meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges (the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord). It is most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Bacterial meningitis is the more serious type — it needs immediate hospital treatment with intravenous antibiotics. Viral meningitis (more common) is usually less severe.

Classic Warning Signs in Adults and Older Children

  • Severe headache — often described as the worst headache ever
  • Neck stiffness — difficulty touching chin to chest, or bending the head forward
  • High fever with chills
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia) — the light hurts the eyes
  • Sensitivity to noise (phonophobia)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Altered consciousness — confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty waking
  • Non-blanching rash — small red or purple spots that do NOT fade when pressed (this is a sign of septicaemia, the most severe complication — call emergency services immediately)

Signs in Infants and Young Children

Meningitis is harder to recognise in babies — they cannot tell you their head hurts:

  • High fever with cold hands and feet
  • Unusual high-pitched cry
  • Bulging fontanelle (soft spot on top of head)
  • Very drowsy, difficult to wake, limp
  • Refusing feeds
  • Pale, mottled skin
  • Blotchy rash

What to Do

If you suspect meningitis — especially if someone has fever + severe headache + neck stiffness, or any rash — get to hospital immediately. Do not wait. This is a situation where acting within hours matters for survival and preventing permanent disability.

Prevention

Vaccines protect against several types of bacterial meningitis — Hib, pneumococcal, and meningococcal vaccines are available. The IAP and NIS vaccine schedules include the most important of these.

"Meningitis is one of the few true neurological emergencies where hours — not days — determine outcome. Know the signs. Act fast."
