Recognise Stroke — FAST
F — Face Drooping
One side of the face droops or feels numb. Ask the person to smile — is the smile uneven or crooked? This is a red flag requiring emergency care.
A — Arm Weakness
Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm. Ask the person to raise both arms — does one drift downward? Any arm weakness warrants immediate evaluation.
S — Speech Difficulty
Sudden slurred speech, inability to speak, or trouble understanding language. These are cardinal signs of stroke.
T — Time to Call Emergency
If any of these signs appear, call emergency services immediately. Clot-dissolving treatment (thrombolysis) is time-critical and must be given within hours.
TIA — The Mini Stroke Warning
A TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack) causes stroke symptoms that resolve within minutes to hours. Despite being temporary, a TIA is a serious warning — 10–15% of TIA patients have a full stroke within 3 months.
