Thyroid Doctor in Hyderabad

Unexplained weight gain. Fatigue that does not improve with rest. Hair falling. Cold intolerance. Thyroid disease is extremely common in India — and easily treated.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common endocrine disorders in India, with hypothyroidism affecting approximately 11% of adults (even higher in women and those with a family history). Yet many patients with thyroid disease are either undiagnosed or sub-optimally treated — cycling through fatigue, weight problems, and hair loss without a clear cause being identified. A simple TSH blood test confirms the diagnosis, and treatment is straightforward and effective.

Key Points

  • Hypothyroidism causes fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and depression — easily missed and often attributed to stress.
  • TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is the most accurate single blood test for thyroid function.
  • Levothyroxine (thyroxine tablet) is the gold standard treatment — taken once daily on an empty stomach.
  • Thyroid medication must be taken at least 30 minutes before food — absorption is severely impaired by food and calcium.
  • Most people on thyroid medication need annual TSH rechecks — dose requirements change over time.

Thyroid Disease — Recognise the Signs

Hypothyroidism — Low Thyroid

Fatigue and sluggishness, unexplained weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, hair thinning, depression, slow heart rate, brain fog. TSH is elevated.

Hyperthyroidism — Overactive Thyroid

Weight loss despite good appetite, anxiety, palpitations, tremor, heat intolerance, excess sweating, loose stools, irregular periods. TSH is low, T3/T4 elevated.

Goitre (Enlarged Thyroid)

Visible swelling at the base of the neck. May be associated with under or overactive thyroid, or may have normal function (euthyroid goitre). Ultrasound assessment and biopsy guidance if nodules are present.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism

Mildly elevated TSH with normal T4 levels. Symptoms may be subtle or absent. Specific groups (pregnant women, those with thyroid antibodies, those with significant symptoms) benefit from treatment.

Thyroid in Pregnancy

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in pregnancy affect foetal brain development and increase pregnancy complications. All pregnant women should be screened, and thyroid levels managed to tight targets.

Thyroid Management at Sri Anand

TSH, Free T4, and Antibody Testing

A full thyroid panel — TSH, free T4, free T3, and TPO antibodies (for autoimmune thyroid disease) — provides a complete picture. We interpret results in the clinical context, not just the reference range.

Levothyroxine for Hypothyroidism

Levothyroxine replacement is straightforward and effective — but must be taken correctly (fasting, 30 minutes before food) and adjusted based on 6-weekly TSH monitoring until stable.

Carbimazole for Hyperthyroidism

Carbimazole block-and-replace therapy for Graves' disease. Regular monitoring for bone marrow suppression (agranulocytosis). Coordination with endocrinologist for radioiodine or surgery if medical therapy fails.

Ultrasound Guidance for Nodules

Thyroid nodules are common (affects 5–10% of adults). We arrange USS and arrange fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for nodules with suspicious features — guided by TIRADS classification.

Pregnancy Thyroid Management

Monthly TSH monitoring in pregnancy, tight target TSH of 0.1–2.5 in the first trimester, levothyroxine dose increase early in pregnancy (typically by 25–30%) — all per ETA/ATA pregnancy thyroid guidelines.

"Thyroid disorders are among the most under-diagnosed conditions in India, especially hypothyroidism in women. A woman who feels exhausted, gaining weight, and cold all the time often gets told she is stressed — when a simple TSH test would reveal an underactive thyroid that is completely treatable."
