Learning Disability in Children — Assessment and Support in Hyderabad
Your child is not lazy or dumb. Dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other learning disabilities are brain-based — and with the right diagnosis and support, children thrive.
"My child is intelligent but cannot read properly" or "My child forgets everything learned at school" — these are the most common concerns from parents of children with learning disabilities. Learning disabilities are neurological — not laziness, lack of effort, or poor intelligence. They affect the way the brain processes information, and with early identification, appropriate accommodations, and targeted interventions, affected children can and do succeed academically. At Sri Anand Child and Neuro Center, Chanda Nagar, Dr. Sushma B provides structured assessment of children referred from schools and parents in Hyderabad who are concerned about learning difficulties.
Key Points
- Learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia) affect 10-15% of school-age children in India.
- Children with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence — they are not slow.
- Formal psycho-educational assessment is required for school accommodations and exam support.
- ADHD commonly co-occurs with dyslexia — treating ADHD improves reading outcomes significantly.
- Early remedial education (before age 8) has dramatically better outcomes than intervention in secondary school.

Types of Learning Disability
Dyslexia (Reading Difficulty)
The most common learning disability — difficulty with accurate and fluent word reading, decoding, and spelling. Children with dyslexia often have excellent oral comprehension but struggle with written text. Has nothing to do with intelligence — many highly successful people have dyslexia.
Dyscalculia (Maths Difficulty)
Difficulty understanding numbers, number concepts, and mathematical reasoning. Children may struggle with basic arithmetic, telling time, handling money, or understanding sequences.
Dysgraphia (Writing Difficulty)
Poor handwriting, difficulty organising thoughts on paper, very slow writing speed. Often accompanied by dyslexia and ADHD.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
ADHD often coexists with specific learning disabilities. Inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity make learning in a classroom environment very challenging. Properly managed ADHD dramatically improves academic outcomes.
Auditory and Visual Processing Disorders
Some children have normal hearing and vision but difficulty processing what they hear or see — leading to problems following instructions, copying from the board, or understanding classroom explanations.
How We Identify and Support Children With Learning Disability
Comprehensive Developmental Assessment
Assessment of cognitive ability, academic skills, attention, memory, and processing speed — to identify specific areas of difficulty and distinguish learning disability from other causes (vision, hearing, ADHD, anxiety).
School Report and Teacher Feedback
We review school reports and obtain teacher questionnaires — combining clinical assessment with real-world academic performance to build a complete picture.
Formal Diagnosis Letter for School
We provide a formal assessment report that can be submitted to schools for accommodations: extra time in exams, oral examinations, alternate question formats, and remedial teaching programmes.
ADHD Management (If Comorbid)
Where ADHD is contributing to learning difficulties, we manage this with behavioural strategies, parent and teacher training, and medication when indicated — coordinating closely with the school.
Remedial Therapy Referral
We coordinate referrals to remedial educators, special educators, and occupational therapists — building a support network around the child.

"A child labelled lazy or slow at school is often working twice as hard as their classmates to understand the same material. Once we identify the specific learning disability and put the right support in place, these children often flourish — and many go on to highly successful careers."
