Memory Loss — When Forgetting Is More Than Just Age

We all forget things sometimes. But when forgetting disrupts daily life — getting lost in familiar places, forgetting conversations — it needs a specialist assessment.

Memory loss that affects daily function is not a normal part of ageing. While mild forgetfulness is common after 50, significant memory problems — forgetting recent conversations, getting confused in familiar surroundings, repeating questions, or personality changes — are warning signs that require neurological assessment. At Sri Anand Child and Neuro Center, Chanda Nagar, Dr. Anand Karnam (DrNB Neurology) evaluates memory concerns using standardised cognitive tests, brain imaging, and blood investigations to identify treatable and reversible causes — and to diagnose and manage dementia when present.

Seek Emergency Care Immediately If You Have:

  • 1Getting lost in familiar places or neighbourhoods
  • 2Forgetting recent conversations or events repeatedly
  • 3Significant personality or behaviour changes
  • 4Difficulty with familiar tasks like cooking or managing money
  • 5Sudden onset confusion (not gradual)
  • 6Memory loss with headache or neurological symptoms

Possible Causes of This Symptom

Alzheimer's Disease

The most common cause of progressive memory loss in people over 60. Begins with difficulty remembering recent events, progresses to language, planning, and orientation difficulties. Treatment can slow progression significantly.

Vascular Dementia

Memory and thinking problems caused by small strokes or reduced blood flow to the brain. Often step-wise in progression (sudden worsening, then plateau). Very common in patients with hypertension and diabetes.

Reversible Causes

Vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, depression, sleep deprivation, and medication side effects can all mimic dementia. These are fully reversible with treatment — an important reason why every memory complaint deserves a thorough workup.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

An often-missed and treatable cause of memory loss, walking difficulty, and urinary incontinence — the classic triad. Excess fluid in the brain ventricles. MRI brain diagnoses it; shunt surgery can dramatically improve all three symptoms.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)

A state between normal ageing and dementia. Memory or thinking is slightly reduced but daily function is preserved. Requires monitoring and risk factor management — and may benefit from cognitive stimulation.

How We Diagnose the Cause

1

Cognitive Assessment (MMSE / MoCA)

Standardised cognitive tests measuring memory, orientation, attention, language, and visuospatial skills — completed in the clinic in 10–15 minutes.

2

MRI Brain

Brain MRI identifies atrophy patterns consistent with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia, rules out treatable structural causes (tumour, hydrocephalus), and provides baseline for monitoring.

3

Blood Investigations

Thyroid function, vitamin B12, folate, renal and liver function, full blood count, blood sugar — to identify reversible causes of memory loss.
