Seizure Emergency in Hyderabad — What to Do Right Now
Someone is having a seizure. Stay calm. Here is exactly what to do — and when to call for emergency help.
Witnessing a seizure for the first time is extremely frightening. Most seizures are self-limiting and stop within 1–3 minutes without any intervention. However, a prolonged seizure (status epilepticus — lasting more than 5 minutes) is a neurological emergency requiring immediate medical treatment. Sri Anand Hospital provides 24/7 neurological emergency contact for seizure-related emergencies in Hyderabad.
Emergency Services Available
Step 1 — Time the Seizure
Note the exact time the seizure started. This is the single most important piece of information — a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes is an emergency.
Step 2 — Recovery Position
Turn the person on their side (recovery position) to prevent choking on saliva. Support their head. Keep them from rolling.
Step 3 — Clear the Area
Remove hard or sharp objects from around them. Cushion the head with something soft. Do NOT restrain their movements.
Step 4 — Do NOT Put Anything in the Mouth
NEVER put anything in the mouth during a seizure. The person CANNOT swallow their tongue — this is a myth. Putting objects in the mouth causes broken teeth and injury to both patient and bystander.
Step 5 — Call for Help
Call 108 if: seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, no recovery of consciousness after seizure, this is a first-ever seizure, or the person is pregnant. Call Sri Anand: +91 90633 66983.
Step 6 — Stay Until Recovery
After the seizure, stay with the person until they are fully conscious. They may be confused (post-ictal). Reassure them calmly and accompany them to medical evaluation.
