Sleep Disorders — Insomnia, Sleep Apnoea and Restless Legs Treatment in Hyderabad
Poor sleep affects everything — your mood, memory, heart, and brain. Most sleep disorders have effective treatments, but they start with an accurate diagnosis.
Sleep disorders are among the most underdiagnosed neurological conditions in India. Millions of people struggle with poor sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or restless legs — yet most never seek specialist help, accepting poor sleep as inevitable. At Sri Anand Neuro Center, Chanda Nagar, Dr. Anand Karnam evaluates and manages the full range of sleep disorders with evidence-based approaches — including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, and abnormal behaviours during sleep.
Key Points
- Over 30% of Indian adults suffer from chronic insomnia — but sleeping tablets are rarely the right long-term solution.
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 1 in 5 Indians and doubles the risk of stroke and heart disease if untreated.
- Restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder are neurological conditions, not habits.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has stronger long-term evidence than sleeping tablets.
- A proper sleep study (polysomnography) is the gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea.

Common Sleep Disorders
Insomnia
Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early — occurring at least 3 nights per week for 3 months. Affects 25–30% of adults. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold-standard first-line treatment.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)
Repeated collapse of the upper airway during sleep, causing snoring, gasping, and oxygen dips — without the person waking fully. Causes daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, poor concentration, and raises cardiovascular risk. Diagnosed by sleep study (polysomnography).
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
An irresistible urge to move the legs at rest — especially at night. Causes significant sleep disruption. Very treatable with dopaminergic medications or iron supplementation when the underlying iron deficiency is identified.
REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder
Acting out vivid dreams — punching, shouting, falling out of bed during sleep. An important early marker of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Requires neurological evaluation and protective sleep environment measures.
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (Narcolepsy / Hypersomnia)
Irresistible daytime sleepiness despite adequate night sleep, sometimes with sudden muscle weakness triggered by emotion (cataplexy) — classic narcolepsy. Rare but treatable if properly diagnosed.
How We Diagnose and Treat Sleep Disorders
Sleep History and Questionnaires
Detailed sleep history, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Insomnia Severity Index — standardised tools that characterise the sleep disorder and guide investigation.
Sleep Study Referral (When Needed)
For suspected obstructive sleep apnoea or narcolepsy, we arrange polysomnography (overnight sleep study) at a sleep laboratory in Hyderabad and interpret the results.
CBT-I for Insomnia
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia — the gold-standard non-medication treatment. Highly effective, long-lasting results. We teach sleep restriction, stimulus control, sleep hygiene, and cognitive restructuring.
Evidence-Based Medication
Short-term sleep medications (melatonin, low-dose sedating antidepressants, Z-drugs) when appropriate. Dopamine agonists for restless legs. Sodium oxybate or stimulants for narcolepsy. CPAP for sleep apnoea.
Sleep Hygiene Counselling
Personalised advice on sleep timing, bedroom environment, screen exposure, caffeine, and exercise — the foundations of good sleep that are often overlooked.
Why Choose Sri Anand Hospital?
Treated by: Dr. Anand Karnam · DrNB (Neurology) · Sleep Medicine · 12+ Years Experience
"Sleep disorders are massively under-diagnosed in India. Snoring loudly and feeling exhausted every morning is not normal — it may be obstructive sleep apnea, which silently doubles your stroke risk. I take poor sleep seriously as a neurological problem, not a lifestyle inconvenience."
