Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children: Early Signs, Diagnosis and What to Do in Hyderabad

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1 in 68–100 children in India — a condition that affects social communication, behaviour, and sensory processing. The word "spectrum" is important: ASD ranges from children with no speech and severe intellectual disability to highly verbal, intellectually gifted individuals who struggle with social interaction and rigid thinking patterns. Early identification — ideally before age 2–3 — and intensive early intervention produces dramatically better outcomes than late diagnosis.

Early Red Flags: The M-CHAT Screening Points

By 12 months: Does not respond to their name being called; does not point at objects to show interest; does not make eye contact consistently; does not babble or produce any words.

By 18 months: No single words; no pointing to share interest (not just to request); no pretend play; does not imitate actions.

By 24 months: No two-word spontaneous phrases (not just echoing); loss of previously acquired language or social skills at any age (regression — immediate evaluation needed).

Additional signs at any age: Unusual sensory responses (extreme distress from sounds, textures, or lights; or seeming not to feel pain); repetitive body movements (hand-flapping, rocking, spinning); intense restricted interests; insistence on sameness and extreme distress with routine changes; unusual attachment to objects rather than people; limited or absent sharing of enjoyment.

What ASD Is Not

ASD is not caused by vaccines — this has been studied in millions of children across dozens of countries and disproven conclusively. ASD is not caused by "bad parenting" or emotional neglect. ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition with strong genetic components and complex environmental interactions during early brain development.

Assessment Process

A paediatric developmental assessment involves: parent interview, direct observation of the child, developmental screening tools (M-CHAT, CARS, ADOS-2), hearing assessment (to rule out hearing loss as a cause of language delay), and sometimes further specialist assessments. ASD diagnosis in India is clinical — there is no blood test or scan that diagnoses it.

Early Intervention — Why It Matters So Much

The brain's neuroplasticity is highest in the first 3 years of life. Intensive Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and special education started before age 3 produces far better long-term outcomes in communication, adaptive behaviour, and quality of life than the same interventions started at age 5–7. Waiting to "see if the child grows out of it" costs irreplaceable developmental time.
