Is My Child Developing Normally? A Simple Milestone Guide

My child is not talking yet at 2 years — is that normal? When should my baby walk? This guide answers the questions every parent worries about, with simple milestone charts.

Every parent wonders at some point: "Is my child developing at the right speed?" Whether it is your baby's first steps, first words, or ability to follow instructions, this guide will help you understand what is normal and when to get a doctor's opinion.

Remember: Every Child is Different

Children develop at their own pace. Some walk at 10 months, some at 15 months — both can be completely normal. Milestones are not exact deadlines but rather useful guides. What matters more than hitting an exact age is that your child is making progress over time.

Milestones from Birth to 1 Year

  • 2 months: Smiles when you smile at them, makes cooing sounds, follows objects with their eyes
  • 4 months: Laughs, holds their head up, reaches for objects, recognises your face
  • 6 months: Sits with support, rolls over, babbles ("ba ba ba"), shows interest in toys
  • 9 months: Sits without support, crawls or moves around, responds to their name, shows stranger anxiety
  • 12 months: Pulls up to stand, may take first steps, waves bye-bye, says "mama" or "dada" with meaning

Milestones from 1 to 2 Years

  • 15 months: Walks independently, uses 3–10 words
  • 18 months: Walks well, points to things they want, can follow simple instructions like "give me the ball"
  • 2 years: Runs, speaks 50+ words, starts combining 2 words ("mama come", "more water"), imitates actions seen at home

Milestones from 2 to 4 Years

  • 2.5–3 years: Speaks in short sentences (3–4 words), can be understood by familiar people, plays alongside other children
  • 3 years: Asks simple questions, names friends, follows 2–3 step instructions, draws simple shapes
  • 4 years: Tells stories, plays with other children (not just next to them), counts to 10, can dress themselves with help

Warning Signs — When to See a Paediatrician

Please consult a doctor if your child:

  • Is not making eye contact by 3 months
  • Is not smiling at familiar people by 3 months
  • Is not babbling by 9 months
  • Is not saying any single words by 16 months
  • Is not walking independently by 18 months
  • Is not saying 2-word phrases by 24 months
  • Loses skills they previously had (e.g., stops talking when they used to talk — this is always a red flag)
  • Does not respond to their name when called
  • Seems uninterested in other people or playing
"If you have a gut feeling that something is not quite right about your child's development, trust that feeling. Early assessment and early intervention make an enormous difference."

What Happens at a Developmental Check?

A paediatrician will assess your child through observation and simple play activities. If needed, they may refer to a speech therapist, developmental paediatrician, or other specialist. Early therapies — started before age 3 — have the best outcomes for developmental delays.

At Sri Anand Child and Neuro Center in Chanda Nagar, Hyderabad, Dr. Sushma B provides complete developmental assessments for children from Ameenpur, Miyapur, Lingampally, and all surrounding areas. If you are worried about your child's development, book a consultation early.
