Does your child catch a cold every few weeks? Is every season a fight against fever and infections? Here are 7 evidence-based tips to genuinely strengthen your child's immunity.
Does it feel like your child is always sick? One cold barely clears up before the next one starts? You are not alone — this is one of the most common concerns parents bring to us. The good news is that there is a lot you can do.
Is It Normal for Children to Get Sick Often?
Young children — especially those who just started school or crèche — can get 6 to 10 infections a year, and this is considered normal. Their immune systems are still learning to recognise and fight new germs. However, if your child is getting ill more than this, or the illnesses are serious, it is worth discussing with a paediatrician.
7 Proven Ways to Build Your Child's Immunity
1. Complete All Vaccines on Time
Vaccines are the single most effective way to protect your child from specific serious diseases. They do not just protect the child who is vaccinated — they also protect the whole family by preventing the spread of infection. Follow the IAP 2025 immunization schedule (see our vaccination guide for details).
2. Breastfeed as Long as Possible
Breast milk is nature's perfect immune booster. It contains antibodies, white blood cells, and protective proteins that formula cannot replicate. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, then continued breastfeeding with complementary foods up to 2 years.
3. Make Sure Your Child Sleeps Enough
Sleep is when the immune system repairs and strengthens itself. Children who don't get enough sleep fall sick more often. Recommended sleep hours:
- Toddlers 1–2 years: 11–14 hours (including nap)
- Preschool 3–5 years: 10–13 hours
- School-age 6–12 years: 9–11 hours
4. Include Immunity-Building Foods Daily
You don't need expensive supplements. These common Indian foods are excellent immune boosters:
- Amla (Indian gooseberry): One of the richest sources of Vitamin C in the world
- Curd and buttermilk: Probiotics that support gut health (70% of the immune system is in the gut)
- Turmeric in warm milk: Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive properties
- Lentils, dal, and legumes: Rich in zinc and protein, both critical for immune cells
- Eggs: Rich in Vitamin D, B12, protein, and zinc — excellent for immunity
- Green leafy vegetables: Spinach, methi — provide Vitamins A, C, and iron
- Seasonal fruits: Guava, papaya, citrus — all rich in Vitamin C
5. Get Daily Outdoor Play — and Sun Exposure
Physical activity strengthens the immune system. Sunlight also helps the body make Vitamin D, which is essential for immunity. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common among Indian children who spend most of the day indoors or glued to screens. Aim for at least 30–60 minutes of outdoor play daily.
6. Teach Handwashing as a Daily Habit
Most infections in children spread through unwashed hands. Teaching your child to wash hands properly — before eating, after using the toilet, after playing outside — is one of the most effective ways to reduce infections. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
7. Reduce Unnecessary Antibiotics
Antibiotics kill bacteria — but most childhood infections (colds, viral fevers, viral throat infections) are caused by viruses, and antibiotics have no effect on viruses. Using antibiotics unnecessarily disturbs the gut microbiome (the healthy bacteria in the gut) which plays a huge role in immunity. Only take antibiotics when a doctor prescribes them for a confirmed bacterial infection.
"There is no magic immunity supplement. The basics — good food, sleep, outdoor play, vaccines, and hygiene — do more for your child's immunity than any expensive product."
