My Child Won't Sleep: Common Causes and Proven Solutions

From toddlers refusing bedtime to school-children waking up anxious at 2am — sleep problems in children are exhausting for the whole family. Here is what works.

Does your toddler fight bedtime every night? Does your school-age child wake up crying at 2am? Sleep problems in children affect the whole family — and they are one of the most common issues parents ask about.

How Much Sleep Do Children Need?

  • Newborns (0–3 months): 14–17 hours
  • Infants (4–11 months): 12–16 hours including naps
  • Toddlers (1–2 years): 11–14 hours including naps
  • Preschool (3–5 years): 10–13 hours
  • School age (6–12 years): 9–11 hours
  • Teenagers: 8–10 hours

Common Causes of Sleep Problems in Children

  • Irregular schedule: The most common cause. Children's brains depend on consistent sleep and wake times to set their biological clock.
  • Screens before bed: Blue light suppresses melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep.
  • Sleep associations: Children who fall asleep only with a breast or bottle, or being rocked, wake at night and cannot resettle without the same conditions.
  • Anxiety: School-age children often have night fears, separation anxiety, or worry about the next day.
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea: Snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, and bedwetting can indicate blocked airway during sleep — needs ENT evaluation.
  • Restless legs syndrome in older children: uncomfortable leg sensations at night, often with iron deficiency.

What Actually Works

  • Consistent bedtime routine: Same sequence every night — bath, milk/brush, story, lights out. The predictability signals to the brain that sleep is coming.
  • Screens off 1 hour before bed, every night.
  • Teach self-settling: Gently allow children to fall asleep in their own bed rather than being rocked or fed to sleep — this is the single biggest factor in night waking.
  • Cool, dark, quiet bedroom.
  • Manage anxiety with reassurance rituals, a night light if needed, and addressing daytime worries.
"Consistent bedtime routines are the most evidence-backed tool we have for childhood sleep. Within 2–3 weeks of starting one, most children's sleep improves significantly."
