Worm Infections in Children: Signs, Treatment, and Deworming in India

Dr. Sushma B Dec 3, 2025 4 min read

Pediatrics

Intestinal worm infections are very common in Indian children and often go unnoticed. Here is how to recognise them, treat them, and prevent re-infection.

Intestinal worm infections (helminths) are extremely common in Indian children, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation or where children play outdoors and in soil frequently. They often cause few or no symptoms, but chronic infection impairs nutrition, growth, and school performance.

Most Common Worm Infections in Indian Children

  • Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides): The most common. Transmitted by contaminated soil and food. May cause abdominal pain, poor appetite, passing worms in stool. Heavy infection can cause intestinal obstruction.
  • Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis): Causes intense anal itching, particularly at night. Spreads easily through household contact. Very common in school-age children.
  • Hookworm: Transmitted through skin contact with contaminated soil (especially walking barefoot). Causes significant iron deficiency anaemia over time.
  • Whipworm (Trichuris): Causes diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and can cause rectal prolapse in severe infection.

Signs That May Indicate Worm Infection

  • Passage of worms in the stool
  • Intense anal itching, especially at night (pinworm)
  • Abdominal pain and bloating
  • Grinding teeth at night (debated but commonly reported)
  • Poor appetite and weight loss
  • Iron deficiency anaemia (especially hookworm)

Treatment

Most common worm infections in children are treated with a single dose of albendazole (400mg) or mebendazole. For pinworm, the whole household is usually treated simultaneously, and the dose is repeated after 2 weeks (to kill any newly hatched worms).

National Deworming Programme

The Government of India runs a National Deworming Day (typically in February and August), providing a free dose of albendazole to all children aged 1–19 years in government schools and anganwadis. This is an important public health initiative.

Prevention

  • Handwashing with soap before eating and after toilet — the most important prevention
  • Shoes outdoors and in soil areas
  • Washing vegetables and fruits thoroughly
  • Safe disposal of human waste
  • Keep nails short and clean
"The simplest and most effective prevention for most worm infections is proper handwashing. Teaching children this habit from an early age saves them from multiple infections."
