Child Asthma Specialist in Hyderabad
Wheezing. Frequent cough at night. Breathlessness with play. Childhood asthma is very common, very treatable, and should never limit your child's life.
Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory condition in children, affecting approximately 10% of Indian children. Despite being common, asthma in Indian children is dramatically under-diagnosed — often labelled as 'frequent bronchitis', 'chest cold', or 'weak lungs'. Untreated asthma disrupts sleep, limits physical activity, causes school absence, and can lead to severe, life-threatening attacks. Dr. Sushma B at Sri Anand Hospital provides evidence-based asthma diagnosis and management following GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma) guidelines.
Key Points
- Childhood asthma often presents as recurrent cough (especially at night) — not always wheeze.
- Inhalers are the most effective and safest treatment — medicine delivered directly to the lungs.
- A written asthma action plan reduces ER visits and hospitalisations dramatically.
- Common triggers in Hyderabad: house dust mites, cockroach allergen, outdoor air pollution, and cold air.
- Most children with well-controlled asthma can play sports, swim, and live completely normal lives.

Childhood Asthma — Signs and Symptoms
Recurrent Wheeze
A high-pitched whistling sound when the child breathes out — the hallmark of asthma. Three or more wheezing episodes in the first 3 years of life, or any wheezing after age 3, is highly suggestive of asthma.
Night-Time and Early Morning Cough
A dry, persistent cough that is worse at night or early morning — often the only symptom in some children ('cough-variant asthma'). Frequently misdiagnosed as repeated viral infections or acid reflux.
Breathlessness with Exercise
Becoming breathless more quickly than peers during running or sports, or avoiding physical activity — exercise-induced bronchoconstriction is a common asthma manifestation.
Frequent Chest Infections
Children with uncontrolled asthma have increased airways inflammation that makes them more susceptible to viral-triggered wheezing episodes, often labelled as 'repeated chest infections'.
Asthma Triggers
Common triggers: viral infections (most important in children), dust, pollen, pet dander, cold air, exercise, cigarette smoke (including second-hand), and emotional stress.
Childhood Asthma Management
Clinical Diagnosis and Risk Classification
Asthma diagnosis in children under 5 is clinical — based on symptom patterns. In older children, lung function testing (spirometry) confirms obstruction. We classify severity to guide therapy step.
Inhaler Training
Inhalers — when used correctly — are far more effective and safer than oral medications. We invest time teaching correct inhaler technique to both child and parent, with a spacer device for young children.
Preventer vs Reliever Inhalers
Reliever (salbutamol) opens the airways during an attack. Preventer (inhaled corticosteroid — budesonide, fluticasone) reduces airway inflammation and prevents attacks. Both are needed for persistent asthma.
Trigger Avoidance
Practical, achievable trigger avoidance measures — dust mite covers for mattresses, no smoking in the home, air filtering strategies, and pet management guidance.
Written Asthma Action Plan
Every child with asthma gets a written personalised action plan — green zone (well-controlled), yellow zone (worsening), and red zone (emergency) — so parents can respond appropriately at home.

"Asthma carries huge myths in India — that inhalers are addictive, that they stunt growth, that asthma means no exercise. None of these are true. With good inhaler technique and a clear action plan, my patients with asthma play cricket and swim competitively."
